NICOLAS COBER

Nicholas Cober was born November 24, 1763 and died August 27, 1842. He married Eva Fisher who was born June 27, 1777 and died February 21, 1859. They were married in Somerset Co., Pa., and both are buried in the Cober cemetery near Maple. They had three sons and eight daughters. His son, Peter, became elder, or overseer, as they were called then, of Markham and later Nottawa district. Three daughters married ministers, namely, Magdeline who married Christian Troyer June 5, 1882. Witnesses were David Leek and Nicholas Cober, Jr., father of Rev. Peter Cober of the United Missionary Church. Catherine Cober married Samuel Snider June 15, 1829. Witnesses were Jacob Curts and Martha Bennet, cousins of the bride. He later became minister of Markham district. Susan married Neil Holm who lived where James Dennie lives, a few miles south of Gormley. They were married November 13, 1832. Witnesses were Daniel Crider and Samuel Snider. He became a minister when Waterloo district was organized. Rachel Cober married John Doner and Barbara Cober married John Baker who later became one of the first ministers of Nottawa district.

Nicholas Cober's children were nearly all married by the Rev. Wm. Jenkins, a Presbyterian minister who performed all the marriages from 1818 to 1843. Nicholas Cober, a son of above, was born March 14, 1811. He married Nancy Holm of Waterloo, a member of the church. Their son, Peter, became a minister of the M.B.C. Church. His daughter married Rev. W. G. Waldron of the United Church. Jacob Cober was born July 8, 1815. He married Mary Groh of Waterloo. He and his brother, Nicholas, settled on the land his father took up near Hespeler. Simon Cober, his grandson, was chosen to the ministry of the Rosebank church and his son, Irwin, is a deacon. His daughter married Ray Sider who is a minister at Boyle at present. Ray Sider's daughter, Marjorie, married Ronald Lofthouse who is pastor at the Toronto mission.
